In the fall of 2003, we attended the Thomas Angus Ranch production sale near Baker City, Oregon. There we noticed a tremendously stout weaning-age bull calf at the side of a two-year-old heifer. She was about as perfect a two-year-old heifer as we had ever seen…a model Angus female. That day, she was not for sale, but her bull calf was. We purchased Thomas Precision E161 3068 because we thought he was the thickest, most eye-appealing bull calf of the sale and had the performance records to go with it. There were others who evidently saw it the way we did as "3068" went on to become the high-selling bull of the sale.
He was shipped to Oklahoma the next spring as a yearling, collected and brought to the ranch to be used natural service in the summer of ’04. His first calves hit the ground in the spring of ’05 and are now yearlings with ultrasound data. As we suspected looking at his topline the day we purchased him, he did have some ribeye…and has now become, as of the latest sire summary report, the No.9 rated bull in the Angus breed among all proven sires for ultrasound ribeye area.
In the fall of 2005, we returned to the Thomas Angus Ranch production sale with the hopeful goal in mind of purchasing the dam of "3068". It wasn’t easy as by then, Thomas Carol 1246 had made some friends and the bidding was fierce. With the aid of a partner and friend Dan Byrd of California, we were able to team up and purchase "Carol". We believe she has an exciting future. Many donor cows are known for their daughters, but Carol will be the producer of great daughters and great sons! In that same sale, her son Thomas Lead On 5424 was the second high weaning age selling bull at $12,000 to Hutchings Cattle Co. LLC, Fallon, NV.
Following her purchase, Carol 1246 was moved to Trans Ova in Montana where she has been flushed to OCC Emblazon and EXT. A heifer pregnancy sired by OCC Emblazon was offered in the National Western Foundation Female Sale at Denver this past January bringing a price of $12,000 to Limestone Angus, Perkins, OK. OCC Emblazon and EXT heifer pregnancies will be offered in the September 7, 2006, Byrd Cattle Co. Sale in Red Bluff, CA. Sons will be offered in the October 9, 2006, Parker Ranch Production Sale, Waurika, OK.
We expect "3068" to produce not only top-quality carcass bulls, but heifers that are feminine and will milk with beautiful udders that will go on to make outstanding cows.
